Mr Children: Tagatame (For Whom)

Tagatame (For Whom)

      04.05.03
      Artist: Mr. Children
      Title: Tagatame (For Whom)
      Words: Sakurai Kazutoshi
      Music: Sakurai Kazutoshi

If you’re worried about that Dicaprio movie,
I just set it to record.
      Let’s talk a little longer,
it’s still too early to go to bed.

      I wonder how many others,
aside from you and me, are looking at these stars.
some of them are probably crying.
and others might even be kissing.

what must we first do, to live in this town
without turning the children into victims, purpetrators?
but if they were to become victims and purpetrators,
is there nothing else we can do
but to shed tears, till our eyes are puffy
      and pray?

      just hold one another
pat each other on the shoulder, and hold one another
take each other’s hands and hold one another

the person to the left, the one to the right
surely they’re connected in an unexpected place
we can’t condemn only one side,
we’re creatures linked to one another

how many more times will we be faced with
the sadness and anger lurking in this world
      can we allow this?
if it’s nice out tomorrow, let’s go to the big park
      and just stroll around.
holding hands, we’ll bring the dog too,
without a thought in our heads.

      fighting, fighting
      for whom are we fighting
      fighting, who won?
      for whom? for whom?
      for whom did we fight?

what must we first do, to live in this town
without turning the children into victims, purpetrators?
but if they were to become victims, purpetrators,
the very least we can do,
is to but love as we always do in spite of our many failures.

      just hold one another
pat each other on the shoulder, and hold one another
take each other’s hands and hold one another
      let’s just, just
      let’s just, just
      let’s just hold one another

      fighting, fighting
      for whom are we fighting
      fighting, who won?
      for whom? for whom?
      for whom did we fight?

Translated By: Brian Stewart & Takako Sakuma

Translator’s Notes: When I hear the beginning of this song, it makes me
think Sakurai is talking to his younger daughter. Also later when he says
“Let’s go to the park” it sounds again like he is addressing his child.
