Mr Children: Tobe (Up, Up and Away)

August 21, 2008

Tobe (Up, up and Away)

      10.09.05
      Artist: Mr. Children
Title: Tobe (Up, Up and Away)
      Words: Sakurai Kazutoshi
      Music: Sakurai Kazutoshi

I’m about what I appear to be
hangin’ in there, but actually just this small time little dweeb.
ever since I was little, average height, average size
I didn’t have a skill to make me stand out
and I’ve come this far without a word of praise or admonishment

I have to change, I must put an end to this today
every time I promise myself this way,
but I never feel like making a try for the prize
got lower back pains and a migraine
      things aren’t good at home,
that’s my defense for everything, it’s how I run away

the other night I had this silly dream
in it, I was weakened, so here comes my grandma
puts me on her back, and takes out all the bad guys
the next morning, I put my hands together
and offered a prayer of thanks at the family shrine
and suddenly the world seemed clear.
I couldn’t tell you why, but it just did, and that was enough for me

Up, Up, and Away! ride the headwind
“there’s no way I can do this anyway”
pluck out that personal mantra planted in your mind
undo the spell that binds you!
on the carpet, or on the sofa
the minute you make up your mind, that’s your runway,
      Up, Up and Away, fly

the young people act like they own the streets
actually, I feel a bit jealous of them
the impulses I got rid of in order to gain stability
take a new form, and re-emerge
speaking into my pillow, “i wish I could fly, I wish I could fly”
when we found out about purines, we switched beers,
everyone in Japan thinking they were Mino Monta. *1
I want to know the key to survival
but yesterday, I drank myself silly, until the dawn
since then, for some reason, everything’s been fine
I couldn’t tell you why, but it just was, and that was enough for me

Up, Up and Away! flap those wings you dream of
pluck out the excuse you use
to escape defeat before you’ve even tried
undo the spell that binds you,
on the slide, on the bench
the minute your mind’s made up
      that’s your launching pad
      Up, Up and Away, fly

go on, let go of the lifeline that holds you back
and then take your freedom, take it.
on the count of one two three Go! start running
even if you have no destination, one day you’ll reach it
Up, Up and Away, that’s right, this is your launching pad
that’s right, this is your runway
spread those wings, undo the spell that binds you
That’s right this is your launching pad,
That’s right, this is your runway
      even if there’s no destination
      away you go now.

Translated By: Brian Stewart & Takako Sakuma

Translator’s Notes: I see the title as more than just someone saying
“Fly!”, It’s like “Up, Up, and Away!” I get sort of a Superman vibe from
it. In the song the singer is sort of building himself up for it,
convincing himself to fly, which is why I think Sakurai chose this
particular kanji, which is more akin to “leap” or “jump”. On to the *s.

      * 1 – Mino Monta is sometimes called the Regis Philbin of Japan mostly
because he was the Japanese host of “Who Wants to Be A Millionaire”. He’s
one of the elite TV hosts, known especially for a show called Omoikkiri TV
which is on afternoons and which often highlights healthy eating. In this
case Sakurai is suggesting that everyone stopped buying beer with purines
(for fear of developing gout), fancying themselves little Mino Monta’s.
