Universe: Dorama Theme Songs

September 15, 2008

This is the list of doramas that used Mr Children’s song as its theme song and/or inserts. The latest one is listed first etc.

Dorama: Code Blue –  The drama’s full title is “Code Blue: Doctor Heli Kinkyu Kyumei.” The concept is based on Japan’s proposal for an emergency medical service using helicopters to quickly reach those in need. Yamashita stars as a young doctor-in-training, working under the guidance of an experienced “flight doctor”.

Dorama: Battery –  A story about a teenage pitcher and catcher who develop a firm friendship through their battery. Harada Takumi, an aloof junior high school boy who has a great arm, meets Nagakura Go, who can catch Takumi’s fastball. Together, they build up a trusting relationship among the teammates.  Ijah’s Note: Battery = art of batting as in baseball batting; not the energy source that you use to power the Energizer Bunny :-D

Dorama: 14 Sai no Haha – Shida Mirai plays an average junior high school student who becomes pregnant with her lover’s child. The drama will show her gradually maturing as the circumstances around her change.

Dorama: Orange Days – Kai Yuuki (Satoshi Tsumabuki) is in his senior year at university studying social welfare psychology. At present, he is in the middle of job-hunting season. He is finding it difficult with no job offers so far. One day, he meets a girl who is playing violin in the campus. She is Sae Hagio (Kou Shibasaki). In marked contrast to her beautiful tone and attractive looks, her personality is somewhat impertinent. And to top it off, she communicates through very vulgar sign language. Four years ago, she lost the most important thing for a violinist – her hearing. As a result Sae closed off her inner self from the outside world. Kai finds himself on a date with Sae, in place of his best friend. Unexpectedly, he comes into contact with Sae’s private side. Love, job-hunting, friendship… Setting a campus in spring as a dorama`s backdrop, it’s the start of a glittering youth drama.

Dorama: Koufuku no Ojii – This is the tragic love story of Shuhei and Umi. Shuhei is the only surviving son of a hospital director. He loves to play the piano as accompaniment to Umi’s cello. Umi is the only daughter of a couple who own a little restaurant. As she is a great cellist, Umi obtained a scholarship to attend a famous music school in Austria. While Shuhei dreams of going to Austria with her, being the sole heir in his family, he has to take up medicine to become a doctor. Ryosuke is Shuhei’s best friend, but he secretly covets Umi for himself. On graduation day, he purposely lied to the young lovers, causing them to miss meeting each other. On her way home, Umi was knocked over by a truck, and lost the full mobility to her fingers, dashing her dream of becoming a cellist. Shuhei meanwhile, thinks that Umi had given up on him, and left for Austria. He goes on to medical school, and marries an influential banker’s daughter, Noriko. He doesn’t know that Umi had in fact stayed behind in Japan, helping out at her family’s restaurant. Or that she still loves him, but thinks that she’s not good enough for him. One day, they meet by chance…

Youthful Days (theme) and Kimi Ga Suki (insert)

Dorama: Antique – This story is about four men who work in a confectionary. Tachibana Keiichiro (Shiina Kippei) is the owner; Ono Yusuke (Fujiki Naohito) is the superb baker that has a mysterious and mesmerizing aura; Kobayakawa Chikage (Abe Hiroshi) is the waiter and close bodyguard of Tachibana; and last but not least is Kanda Eiji (Takizawa Hideaki), the ex-boxer who loves cake so much that he becomes a waiter at ‘Antique’. This is a refreshing, yet heartfelt comedy about the 4 very unique personalities that work until the wee hours of the night at the small confectionary. The series follows the romance, family life, and most importantly friendship that these 4 men from different generations experience.

This is a confectionary with a “flavour” not like most. Located in the middle of an ordinary residential area, “Antique” stays open until 2 a.m. Every single thing in the shop is antique, in fact even the sherry glasses that water comes in look like they would cost 50,000 yen. On top of this, all the sweets that are sold are unbelievably delicious. The thing that is most peculiar about “Antique” though is that all 4 of the men that work here are very handsome, and each has an interesting past. Those that frequent the store also have a story to tell.

When her life feels like it is at its lowest point, she meets Uchimura, a bus driver whose carefree yet caring approach makes her rethink her life’s direction. When Toshiro unexpectedly returns to Tokyo, she finds herself caught between the two totally different men in her life.

Owari Naki Tabi

nishi e higashi e

Dorama: Kira Kira Hikaru – The job of a medical jurisprudence involves a lot of complicated crimes such as murder and accidents. Hikaru (Fukatsu Eri) is a graduate of a medical university, also focused her discipline on neurology. One night during a student reunion, a dead body was found in the kitchen. Hikaru, who is a little regretting that she choose her focus in neurology was moved by another doctor’s words: “Dead bodies will not tell us what happened, that is why we have to piece together its last words. “

Everything (It’s you)

Dorama:  Koi no Bakansu – Work, romance, and life take on a strange twist when a chance meeting at a bar between company salaryman Mayuzumi Kankuro (portrayed by comedian Akashiya Sanma) and his managing director’s secretary (Suzuki Anju) leads to an engagement rumor. Soon fellow employees and family members are drawn into the mess. Kankuro’s career with the company could be affected as things become complicated and misunderstandings occur in every step he makes in this romantic comedy, and things only get worse with his inability to set the rumor straight.

Tomorrow Never Knows (theme song) & Hoshi ni Naretara (insert song)

Dorama: Wakamono no Subete – This series depicts a group of young people searching for their own directions in life. 22 year-old Tetsuo repairs cars and looks after his little sister after the death of their parents. Around him is a circle of close childhood friends, all with different dreams and different realities. Takeshi used to be Tetsuo’s closest friend but they fell out after an accident. Cross Road

Dorama: Dousoukai – This is the story of Onihara Natsuki, who is married to Ando Fuuma. During his high school days, Ando Fuuma was once in love with a schoolmate, Atari Kousuke. However, as Kousuke is straight, Fuuma tried his best to forget about him, by hanging out at Shinjuku 2-chome. Together with Kousuke’s girlfriend’s brother, Tanno Arashi, Fuuma has sexual orgies with partners of both sexes. Now, Ando Fuuma is married to Onihara Natsuki, who doesn’t know that Ando is gay. One day, Natsuki accidentally found out that Ando is gay. In her despair, she sets out to Shinjuku 2-chome, wandering around aimlessly deep in the night. There, she bumps into Arashi, and had a one-night stand with him, after which Arashi demanded money from her. Soon after, Natsuki realises she is pregnant with Arashi’s child. She abhors the thought of having a child from paid sex and is adamant to have an abortion.

Dakishimetai (insert song)

Dorama: Pure – 25 years old Yuka Orihara (Wakui Emi) is a lovely and cheerful woman. We cannot really see any differences in her appearance, but she was born with a lower IQ than average. She grew up with lots of love of her parents, so she has become a good-natured girl. However, she cannot control her feelings very well, and sometimes she does something too wild, which concerns people around her. While her intellectual ability is low, she has an amazing sense in arts. She has been drawing artistic paintings, and creating unique objects which reflect her pure heart. Her mother (Fubuki Jun) always watches her with love and even her late father, who was also a painter, still influences her. Besides, she has a good friend; Ryo Kanzaki (Takahashi Katsunori). He is her cousin and like a brother to her. But Yuka’s peaceful life suddenly changes when her work gets a prize at a competition to which Ryo has entered her work secretly. She is forced to come out of her small world to an unknown world. And she meets a man; Toru Sawatari (Tsutsumi Shinichi), a reporter for a photo-magazine. He used to be a journalist of a newspaper, but was demoted to an associate company a few years ago. But he is determined to return to the paper as he hates the power. Toru, who is very cool and has a past, starts having a business relationship with Yuka. He does not care about her retardation and treats her as an ordinary person. This comes from his indifference, but as Yuka believes he is a ‘nice’ person, he gets attracted to her purity.

the funny thing is that Antique uses barely any other music (including instrumentals or mood music) OTHER than Mr. Children songs… it’s quite fun to see actually. Even like background music on a passing boombox is a Mr. Children song. it’s actually the reason i watched the whole series hehe

Yah that was the thing that struck me as well. And there was that OBVIOUS plug scene where the geeky guy spilled his backpack and all Mr. Children’s CDs came tumbling out. We (my sisters and I) actually slapped our foreheads and laughed out loud at the blatant space farming.
