Mr Children: Tokyo

April 4, 2009

Tokyo

this is a city of buildings like robots,
emblematic of Tokyo.
Each new day, crawling with workers
who give it their all, who do the best they can.
waiting for the light to change. I stop, someone’s whistling
the melody is all broken up
but for some reason it soothes me a little.

I know
that even if I keep pursuing
the dreams I envision
only a handful of people
will actually reach them.
“if that’s the case, then why am I trying so hard?”
but even as I say this, I know why.
There’s people dear to me in this city.

Tokyo never regresses.
it leaves behind the aging ones,
and fully embraces all that is new
and never before seen.

scenery so full of memories,
will be destroyed again, so I’m trying my best not to cling to them
yet, this smell reminds me
and records it in my genetic code
this place I hold dear in my heart.

from the pedestrian bridge that crosses the bypass
you can often see the colorful flowers blooming on a veranda
my heart gushes with the sweet scent
maybe I’ll write that person a letter?

I guess
that even if I keep pursuing
the dreams and fantasies I envision
only a handful of people
will actually realize them.
I’ll keep trying a little bit longer
and even if the day should come
that possibility is no more
there are still people dear to me.

scenery so full of memories,
will be destroyed again, so I’m trying my best not to cling to them
yet, this smell reminds me
and records it in my genetic code
there are places I hold dear in this city
there are people I hold dear in this city
